Patience: A Lost Skill

Patience: A Lost Skill

If I had a dime every time someone direct messaged me on social media and said they wanted me to coach them because they wanted to be my size, I would have a lot of dimes. And while I truly appreciate the sentiment that they aspire to have a physique like mine, the odds are not in their favor. Genetics, for once, is not the reason why.

The truth is patience is something that rarely exists within today’s younger generation. Everything is in the here and now. You want information now? Google it and get it in 5 seconds. You want fast delivery? Order it from Amazon. Everything is built for convenience and instant gratification. Unfortunately, your body isn’t built that way.

Building a large physique takes consistency and accuracy over a long period of time. You don’t get to be a muscular 300lb in 1 or 2 months. Hell, you don’t even get there in 1 or 2 years. This sort of progress could take up to a decade of work—living and operating like a bodybuilder 24/7/365.

You have to get crazy sometimes, and I’m not telling you these examples to boast or give myself a pat on the back. I’m doing this for you to understand the lengths I’ve taken so that you can take one more step toward where I am now. I’ve left funerals to train. I’ve sat in the car to eat cold yams during an extravagant wedding when I wasn’t getting ready for a show. I did not eat the food at my wedding food sample tasting because I didn’t schedule a cheat meal. I’ve missed more family gatherings than I care to admit; I’ve sat at more dinner tables and didn’t eat than I can remember. These sacrifices all slowly add up to maximize what you’ll look like. The keyword is slowly.

Like I said, this takes time. Many of the examples mentioned above are from 2013, 2014 and beyond. I wasn’t already big then—these years were when I dreamed of being big. Each thing you do right compounds each day, and the snowball effect begins and you will accumulate mass. Month by month and year by year.

Supplements play a part of it but they’re not the whole thing. And if you’re someone who thinks they are and that I’m just lying, I assure you that you will fall short. That is a loser mindset. Just as you must be patient with your training progress, you must be patient with your supplement progression. If you rush how much you’re using, you will leave yourself no “ace” cards to throw in when your progress stalls. Don’t get caught in the “more is better” farce and look around at what everyone else is using. Stay in your lane and keep on your game. Run your own race.

Rather than look at the end goal, embrace your journey. Focus on small wins like strength progression and stringing good workouts together. Stop yourself from falling into a cycle of getting off and back on the wagon. There is nothing more catabolic than inconsistency in your lifestyle. If you get 1% better every week, that’s a lot of percentages over the span of your career. That’s how you become a true freak.
