Running and Gunning
by HIGA MONSTER
The
life of a strongman, powerlifter or bodybuilder can be a full schedule.
Whether you’re a single person but work crazy hours every day or if you
are a family man that has children that need to go to school or
practice for sports, it can get hectic. I need to bust things out and
get it on point or I will forget something. Wake up in the morning,
make the kids breakfast and school lunch, check emails, etc. All this
shit needs to get done so that I can do the one thing I love--lift
weights later that morning.
Sure it’s crazy. Sometimes I feel like
the coffee I drank that morning isn’t working—and I gave it an extra
scoop of grounds to intensify it. This is what we got to do as lifters.
Take care of shit at home and work so that we have a couple of hours to
be in our paradise, the gym. Once we get to the gym, that’s our
solitude. My time to unleash the power and stress inside my body from
running ragged earlier that day.
I think the hard part is staying focused. It’s so fuckin easy to just
give up and not want to work out because you’re tired. You busted your
ass at work or got little sleep because your kid was up coughing all
night. This is the test you need to prepare for. Fatigue is fucking
with you, seeing if you take the bait and skip your workout.
When we are running and gunning, this can mess with you not packing
your meals or supplements too. It’s happened before right? You run
outta the house because you woke up late and as you drive five miles
down the road you realize you didn’t take your Animal Pak or Animal
Flex this morning. Or you didn’t pack your egg whites and baked sweet
potatoes. The best is when you mix up an awesome protein shake full of
nutrients and you realize when you’re stuck in gridlock traffic that
it’s still on your kitchen counter. Fuck me.
Now your day will be mentally unstable because you just realized that
you are starting your day without any of your supplements. How are you
supposed to function? I don’t know about you guys but that really irks
the shit outta me. I hate that feeling that you rushed and forgot to
take care of your priorities. That’s one of the worst feelings a lifter
can experience.
So what can we do to prevent situations like this? Plan ahead ladies
and gentlemen. Set your alarm clock early so that you wake up with
plenty of time. Then you can pack your meals for the day and your
supplements too. This gives you time to shit, shower and shave and get
on with your day.
Another way to help this from happening is to pack your stuff the night
before. I usually fill a plastic container with some extra Uni-Livers,
couple packs of Nitro and a small jug of Atomic 7. Don’t forget the
pre-workout stuff too like Animal Rage or Shock Therapy. If you don’t
want to bring the whole jug, just pack them in a smaller container. I
will even take 2 shaker bottles with me. One is locked and loaded with
some Animal Rage and the other might have Ultra-Whey in it as a meal
replacement if my day is hectic. The point is that if this is taken
care of the night prior or morning of your day, it will help prevent
mental mistakes. I would be so pissed at myself if I had to go to the
gym and buy another company’s pre-workout because I was an idiot and
left mine at home.
Another thing I’d like to point out is that you need to figure out what
time you’re going to work out in the day. Be very realistic and figure
out when is the best time you can at least get an hour of time in the
gym. If you get crazy and start thinking, “I can probably fit it in
between these 2 meetings but one of them may run long” the odds are you
won’t make that workout happen. Don’t leave things to chance and think
you got a 30% chance to workout at a certain time. Block it out on your
calendar and make it happen. That way you can ensure the gym is a
priority and there is no excuse not to be there today.
I know it might sound easy but brothers I feel like I can back it up. I
got 2 daughters that I need to wake up, dress, feed breakfast and give
them their own vitamins before I take them to school. After dropping
them off at school, I head straight to the gym because I have a two and
a half hour window where I can be at the gym, warm-up and get a killer
workout in. There is still enough time for me to drive back home and
eat lunch but all my shit is with me. Pre-workout, intra and
post-workout supplements are in my car. That way there is no excuse
that I’m not taking care of my well-oiled machine while driving in my
vehicle. It’s totally doable but you need to apply it and stay focused.
I hope all of you can possibly choose some wisdom from this article. We
all have different schedules and lead different lives. I just want to
make sure that we all attain the goals we have for ourselves in the gym
despite the craziness of life and other bullshit. If you can dial in
and set a schedule for yourself and stick with it, you will be so proud
of yourself and not come up with excuses that other people give. I
refuse to be those other people and that’s what makes us in the Animal
legion standout. No bullshit, no excuses and strong physically,
mentally and spiritually. |
