Banana Hammock: Posing trunks, aka “Jewel Smugglers”.

Basal Metabolic Rate: BMR. The energy expended by the body at rest. BMR is affected by many factors such as weight, height, age, gender, genetics, etc.

Beast: A monster in the gym. Hulking and brutally strong. See Animal.

Betaine HCL: A non-essential nutrient and a source of hydrochloric acid, a naturally occurring chemical in the stomach that helps digest food by breaking up fats and proteins. In particular, it is necessary for adequate absorption of protein, calcium, vitamin B12 and iron.

Bioflavonoids: Enhances the absorption of Vitamin C, protects and preserves the structures of the capillaries. They act to improve circulation, lower cholesterol levels, and stimulate bile production.

Bioperine: A standardized extract from the fruit of Piper nigrum L (black pepper). It contains 95 percent of piperine. It has been shown to increase nutrient absorption and utilization along the gastrointestinal tract.

Biotin: Aids in cell growth, fatty acid production, metabolism of carbs, fats and protein, and in the absorption of the b-vitamins. May prevent hair loss and can help to relieve muscle pain. Deficiencies result in hair loss, high blood sugar, muscle pain, and insomnia.

Bitch Tits: Gynecomastia, aka Gyno. The development of male breast tissue.

Bloated: Retaining water.

Body Mass Index: BMI. A measurement for total body fat based on height and weight. By BMI standards, bodybuilders would be considered obese due to a higher concentration of muscle mass. Yeah, right…

Boswellia: Acts an anti-inflammatory much like the conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used for inflammatory conditions. The extract, boswellic acid is thought to exert anti-inflammatory effects by preventing the breakdown of connective tissue, and by increasing blood supply to joint tissues.

Branched Chain Amino Acids: BCAA. The anti-catabolic trio of L-valine, L-leucine and L-isoleucine. BCAAs make up three of the “essential amino acids” (see “Essential Amino Acids), of which there are nine.

Bromelain: Derived from the pineapple plant, it is a proteolytic enzyme (enzyme capable of digesting protein). Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory agent and for this reason it’s helpful in healing minor injuries, particularly sprains and strains, muscle injuries, and the pain, swelling, and tenderness that accompany sports injuries.

Bulking: State of being in which a bodybuilder takes in a surplus of calories attempting to gain mass. Off-season.

Butt To The Floor: A method of deep squatting. See Ass In The Grass.
